When I’m asked what I like to paint or what type of art I make, I often want to answer, “Whatever I like to see”. Truly, I’d like to be able to paint it all, to capture it all, but if I did there would be no time left for living. Throughout my life, certain things, people, textures, light, motion and gestures have caught my eye. Those are what I want to show in my work. I’d like my audience to see those fleeting moments or memories of how it was to look upon something or someone and see them as they really are for the first time.
I strive for believability in my work, while still suiting the particular purpose and style of the piece. Whether it be a kitschy pin-up, a landscape, the stance of a hot rod, a pulp cover monster, or the gleam in the eye of a portrait, I’d like to evoke a reality or a feeling as to what inspired it. There are beautiful moments and gestures within, no matter the subject matter or the means by which the medium is handled.
I learn more every time I paint or draw. I’ve amassed countless sketches, flashes of thought; potential future canvases or forms of steel. There are a dozen lifetimes of projects if only there were so much time as there are watercolors and oil paint. Each sketch or brush stroke helps to give me a better creative understanding. By continuing to create, I hope that the true essences of my subjects can be fully realized.
